Karl

How did you get into this line of work?

I was looking to expand my knowledge in driving and the job offered the flexibility and proximity in needed for my family.

What kind of training or certification do you need for this job?

I have a dangerous good license which Nitrogenx put me through training and certification for.

Can you describe the different types of waste you handle?

We handle a variety of clinical waste that comes from a diverse range of clinics – ranges from Sharps & needles to blades, Cytotoxic and a range of dangerous goods that have to be transported separately like mercury and Adaspor.

What measures do you take to ensure safety while on the job?

We are supplied with the correct PPE and we also are not allowed open sharp containers, they must be closed for our protection and all dangerous goods must have the proper DG forms.

How do you manage the physical demands of this job?

I am reasonably physical fit from my years of playing rugby, I still work out and we have ramps in our vans, and you learn ways to movie heavy objects inside & out of vans from working with other drivers.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Learning all the different uses for Liquid Nitrogen and I enjoy the driving – especially when I can drive out of town.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career as a driver?

That there is a wide range of customers to deal with, from those you would expect like doctors to dentists to engineering workshops and restaurants.

What are the company values that drive your work every day?

I strive to ‘Make a Difference’ whether it’s suggesting something to make it easier to do a job or helping a customer when the are unsure about what Sharps they need….

Can you describe the teamwork among the drivers?

We are usually in our own vans but sometimes we will use other vans and we know they will keep it stocked and fill with Liquid Nitrogen. If I run out of stock and I know another driver is in the area, I know I can ask if they can fill that job and if there is an easier way to do something like getting a document bin in and out of places, we share that information. We also have toolbox meetings where we share tips and information.

Can you share a story where our service made a significant impact on a customer or community?

Once I was emptying out a document bin at the warehouse, I noticed a strange envelope and I pulled it out, looked inside and there was $700 dollars in it, I was able to find were I collected the bin from and passed that info on to my manager.

How has working for this company positively impacted your life?

Recently Nitrogenx sponsored a prize for my rugby teams raffle, which helped us out with our day to day running of my rugby team and fundraising.

What do you enjoy most about being part of our team?

Honestly, it’s having others to be around, my previous job was very solitary even though we do our runs on our own, we get to catch up at the workshop and pass on experiences that we have had with customers.
