As Nitrogenx NZ delivers it’s services across the country, in October we celebrate Driver & Operations Appreciation Month, our way to acknowledge the driving and operational teams that keep our essential services running smoothly.
Throughout the Month, we encourage staff and customers alike to share their stories and photos of appreciation. It’s inspiring to see how each person contributes uniquely to our collective success!
To kick off the celebration, we’re spotlighting several outstanding team members below, whose dedication and achievements epitomise Driver and Operations Appreciation Month.
Operations Spotlight – Ashley
What does a typical day look like for you as a driver at Nitrogenx?
While I’m not a driver, I am the Operations Team Lead, I work closely with the Drivers to ensure smooth operations. A typical day for our drivers starts early—they’re on the road by 6 AM, servicing areas all over Auckland and other regions.
I coordinate with customer service and operations to manage delivery schedules, help resolve any issues that arise, and ensure that every driver has a seamless experience throughout the day.
How did you get into this line of work?
I started in an operations role, which involved scheduling and managing logistics. Transitioning into this role was natural because it involved similar elements—coordinating schedules, handling challenges related to daily operations, and ensuring smooth delivery processes.
What kind of training or certification do you need for this job?
Our drivers need a Dangerous Goods endorsement on their license because they transport hazardous materials like liquid nitrogen, medical oxygen, sharps, and clinical waste. Proper training in the safe handling and transportation of these goods is essential to ensure compliance and safety.
What are the biggest challenges you face on the job?
One of the main challenges is ensuring the timely and safe services to all our customers, particularly during high-demand periods like public holidays. Coordinating schedules, keeping the fleet in optimal condition, and managing any last-minute changes.
Can you describe the different types of waste you handle?
We handle medical waste, including sharps, clinical waste, and other hazardous materials like medical oxygen and liquid nitrogen. Each requires specific handling procedures to ensure safety during transport and disposal.
How do you ensure that hazardous waste is disposed of safely?
We follow strict Compliance Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of our drivers. Our team receives thorough training in safety measures and handling protocols. Each step, from pickup to disposal, is carefully monitored to comply with industry standards.
What measures do you take to ensure safety while on the job?
Safety is a top priority. We ensure our drivers have regular safety briefings and toolbox meetings to discuss best practices. We also conduct vehicle inspections and follow H&S protocols strictly. Compliance with Dangerous Goods regulations is paramount.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the collaboration between different teams—customer service, operations, and drivers—to ensure deliveries are executed efficiently.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career as a driver?
I would advise anyone starting out to be ready for early mornings and a fast-paced work environment. It’s important to be detail-oriented, especially when handling hazardous materials. Staying safety-conscious at all times is key. Building good communication skills is also important since you’ll be working closely with both the operations team and customers.
What are the company values that drive your work every day?
Safety, reliability, and exceptional customer service are the core values at Nitrogenx. In my role, I do my best to maintain these values by ensuring our drivers are well-equipped & well-trained.
Can you describe the teamwork among the drivers?
The drivers form a close-knit team, frequently collaborating and supporting one another. They share best practices during toolbox meetings and work together to troubleshoot challenges that arise on the road.
Can you share a story where our service made a significant impact on a customer or community?
I recall an instance where we delivered urgent medical oxygen to a clinic during a particularly challenging time. The clinic was running low, and our timely delivery played a crucial role in patient care. It was a reminder of how essential our work is in supporting healthcare and making a positive impact on the community.
How has working for this company positively impacted your life?
Working for Nitrogenx has given me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills and build strong relationships with both the team and our customers.
