Van set up and working out the best route for the next day’s run is done the afternoon before. On the day it is being on the road early to hit the first clinics as soon as they open. Then methodically undertaking what is required per the run sheet and proactively doing the extra jobs that may be required by the clinic.

How did you get into this line of work?

Semi-retired and saw the position advertised.

What kind of training or certification do you need for this job?

Training is a mixture of on-the-job plus in-house training of ‘standard operating procedures and formal classroom training to obtain a Dangerous Goods licence.

Clinical waste in bags, sharps containers (not always safely closed by clinics) Cytotoxic waste that requires specialist handling, paper waste in document destruction bins and medical oxygen cylinders.

Check that all containers, bags etc are properly secure before removing from clinics etc and then correctly handled and processed at the warehouse.

What measures do you take to ensure safety while on the job?

Wearing eye protection, gloves and safety shoes always as well as adopting safe lifting methods for heavy items.

How do you manage the physical demands of this job?

Go to the gym!!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The variety in terms of driving, different business types we interact with and often (but not always) the staff at the various businesses we go to.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career as a driver?

Give it a go! Drivers who like to think on their feet, focus on solutions and not problems & can employ their initiative will enjoy this role.

What makes working for Nitrogenx unique?

They are a company that looks after their staff and mainly leave drivers to use their own initiative to plan and execute their runs. There is always backup available if required.

What are the company values that drive your work every day?

Having a desire to make a difference and working as team to meet our customers’ requirements.

Can you describe the teamwork among the drivers?

From the Hamilton base we have very little direct contact but still rely on each other to set up the van for the next day and to bounce ideas off where we need to.

Can you share a story where our service made a significant impact on a customer or community?

Rather than a single story I often feel we are the ‘invisible’ spirits who float through our customers premises and magically make their LN, or waste or sharps problems disappear without fuss or fanfare.

How do our services stand out compared to other companies in the industry?

I think the one-stop-shop concept and single-point-of-contact is appreciated by our customers.

How has working for this company positively impacted your life?

Self-esteem maintained… problem-solving and initiative brain-cells developed and a really enjoyable way to spend a couple of days a week.

What do you enjoy most about being part of our team?

Even though we work part-time and mostly on our own it rarely feels that we are forgotten being out of Auckland.

I have a dangerous good license which Nitrogenx put me through training and certification for.

We are supplied with the correct PPE and we also are not allowed open sharp containers, they must be closed for our protection and all dangerous goods must have the proper DG forms.

If I run out of stock and I know another driver is in the area, I know I can ask if they can fill that job and if there is an easier way to do something like getting a document bin in and out of places, we share that information. We also have toolbox meetings where we share tips and information.

Can you share a story where our service made a significant impact on a customer or community?

Once I was emptying out a document bin at the warehouse, I noticed a strange envelope and I pulled it out, looked inside and there was $700 dollars in it, I was able to find were I collected the bin from and passed that info on to my manager.

Operations Spotlight – Ashley

What does a typical day look like for you as a driver at Nitrogenx?

While I’m not a driver, I am the Operations Team Lead, I work closely with the Drivers to ensure smooth operations. A typical day for our drivers starts early—they’re on the road by 6 AM, servicing areas all over Auckland and other regions.
I coordinate with customer service and operations to manage delivery schedules, help resolve any issues that arise, and ensure that every driver has a seamless experience throughout the day.

How did you get into this line of work?

I started in an operations role, which involved scheduling and managing logistics. Transitioning into this role was natural because it involved similar elements—coordinating schedules, handling challenges related to daily operations, and ensuring smooth delivery processes.

What kind of training or certification do you need for this job?

Our drivers need a Dangerous Goods endorsement on their license because they transport hazardous materials like liquid nitrogen, medical oxygen, sharps, and clinical waste. Proper training in the safe handling and transportation of these goods is essential to ensure compliance and safety.

What are the biggest challenges you face on the job?

One of the main challenges is ensuring the timely and safe services to all our customers, particularly during high-demand periods like public holidays. Coordinating schedules, keeping the fleet in optimal condition, and managing any last-minute changes.

Can you describe the different types of waste you handle?

We handle medical waste, including sharps, clinical waste, and other hazardous materials like medical oxygen and liquid nitrogen. Each requires specific handling procedures to ensure safety during transport and disposal.

How do you ensure that hazardous waste is disposed of safely?

We follow strict Compliance Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of our drivers. Our team receives thorough training in safety measures and handling protocols. Each step, from pickup to disposal, is carefully monitored to comply with industry standards.

What measures do you take to ensure safety while on the job?

Safety is a top priority. We ensure our drivers have regular safety briefings and toolbox meetings to discuss best practices. We also conduct vehicle inspections and follow H&S protocols strictly. Compliance with Dangerous Goods regulations is paramount.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the collaboration between different teams—customer service, operations, and drivers—to ensure deliveries are executed efficiently.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career as a driver?

I would advise anyone starting out to be ready for early mornings and a fast-paced work environment. It’s important to be detail-oriented, especially when handling hazardous materials. Staying safety-conscious at all times is key. Building good communication skills is also important since you’ll be working closely with both the operations team and customers.

What are the company values that drive your work every day?

Safety, reliability, and exceptional customer service are the core values at Nitrogenx. In my role, I do my best to maintain these values by ensuring our drivers are well-equipped & well-trained.

Can you describe the teamwork among the drivers?

The drivers form a close-knit team, frequently collaborating and supporting one another. They share best practices during toolbox meetings and work together to troubleshoot challenges that arise on the road.

Can you share a story where our service made a significant impact on a customer or community?

I recall an instance where we delivered urgent medical oxygen to a clinic during a particularly challenging time. The clinic was running low, and our timely delivery played a crucial role in patient care. It was a reminder of how essential our work is in supporting healthcare and making a positive impact on the community.

How has working for this company positively impacted your life?

Working for Nitrogenx has given me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills and build strong relationships with both the team and our customers.
